Santone Stars on Senior Day

Christina Santone had a Senior Day to remember.

The lone playing senior on the Muhlenberg women's basketball team, Santone recorded game highs of 17 points, 13 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals in a 78-49 win against Washington College.

Sophomores Rachel Plotke (14 points) and Brandi Vallely (11) also scored in double figures as the Mules (20-2, 14-2) reached the 20-win mark for the ninth time in the last 15 years. Muhlenberg also kept pace with McDaniel, an overtime winner at Haverford, in the race for the top seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs.

Santone, honored before the game along with senior team manager Kerrilynn Lanza, has established herself as one of the top shot blockers in CC history (fifth all-time with her school-record total of 192) and, increasingly as her career has progressed, a rebounding presence and a threat to score inside. But she showed off some new skills in the fourth quarter of her final scheduled home game.

Christina SantoneThe 6-2 center nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key on the first attempt of her career with 7:28 remaining. Three minutes later, Santone (pictured at left) stole a pass and dribbled the length of the court for a layup before leaving to a rousing ovation.

The game was long decided by then. Muhlenberg jumped all over the Shorewomen (3-19, 0-16) in the first quarter, closing out on an 18-0 run to take a 26-4 lead. The Mules shot 52.9 percent in the first quarter and did not lead by fewer than 15 the rest of the game.

Vallely flirted with her fifth triple-double of the season, adding nine rebounds and nine assists to her 11 points. Junior Maggie Zerbe finished with nine points, eight rebounds and two blocks, and sophomore Christina Manning went 3-of-6 from three-point range for all nine of her points.

Muhlenberg held Washington to 26.9-percent shooting and had a 49-35 advantage on the boards.
