Volleyball Clinches Playoff Spot with Win

The Muhlenberg volleyball team clinched a Centennial Conference playoff berth for the third time in four years, defeating Ursinus 3-0 for the team's third straight sweep.

The Mules (18-9, 7-3 CC) currently sit in third place in the CC standings with no conference matches left to play. If Haverford loses its final conference match to Swarthmore on Saturday, Muhlenberg clinches a first-round bye. If Haverford defeats Swarthmore and Franklin & Marshall also beats Dickinson Saturday, a tiebreaker scenario will determine who finishes in third place.

Muhlenberg faced a tough first-set challenge from the Bears (8-14, 1-9 CC) but rallied in the end to take it 25-23 before cruising to a 25-9 second set win and a 25-16 third set clincher.

Freshman Maggie Enestvedt had a match-high 10 kills to go with four digs and three blocks. Sophomore Shannon Hubert recorded 27 assists to go with seven kills and four blocks. She is now three assists away from becoming the second Mule ever to notch 800 assists in a season.

Senior Allison Glass had a team-high 13 digs, giving her 901 in her career, while also making seven kills. Senior Elizabeth Garrison moved into third on the all-time digs list with 1,395 after recording 12 digs in the match, while sophomore Kelly Tornetta made 10 digs.

The first set went back-and-forth with the teams knotted at 19-19. The Mules won the next four points starting with a kill from sophomore Erica Schultz. Ursinus climbed back to tie the stanza at 23-23. Hubert then made a kill and Muhlenberg won the set on a Bears attack error on the following point.

Muhlenberg jumped out to an early 13-2 lead in the second set with freshman Madison Forrest serving eight straight points on the Mules run.

Freshman Tara Register started the third set with a kill, one of five for her in the match on six attacks with no errors. The Bears rallied to take a 10-6 lead in the stanza, but the Mules fought back and took a 12-11 lead on a Register ace.

Ursinus kept the third stanza close until the Mules closed out the set on a 9-2 run and won the match on Garrison's second ace of the night.

Muhlenberg held Ursinus to a .038 hitting percentage in the match and totaled 11 blocks to Ursinus' four. Schultz and Hubert each had four blocks to lead Muhlenberg.
