Volleyball Plays Haverford Tough in Defeat

Returning to Centennial Conference play after its trip to California, the Muhlenberg volleyball team played 2015 conference runner-up Haverford close through three sets but faded down the stretch in the fourth set to fall 3-1.

The Mules (13-8, 4-2 CC) split the first two sets with the Fords (10-9, 3-3 CC) and climbed back in the third set from a seven-point deficit to eventually tie the set at 24-24 before dropping the next two points. The two teams matched point for point in the fourth set before Haverford pulled away to take the match.

Sophomore Kelly Tornetta led the Mules with 16 kills. Sophomore Shannon Hubert recorded 41 assists to go with 10 digs for a double-double. Senior Elizabeth Garrison finished with a match-high 26 digs while freshman Madison Forrest contributed with a team-high four blocks.

The teams traded points in the first set to knot the score at 10-10 before Haverford went on a 6-0 run to help earn a 25-18 first set victory.

Muhlenberg trailed in the second set as well before kills from Tornetta and Forrest helped the Mules tie the set at 10-10. Muhlenberg took the lead off a Haverford error and a Forrest service ace. With the score tied at 17, the Mules pulled away with an 8-2 run to take the second set 25-19 and tie the match.

The Fords grabbed a 20-13 lead in the third set before the Mules won the next five points starting with a kill from Hubert to cut the deficit to two. After a Haverford kill, senior Allison Glass made one of her nine kills in the match and Hubert scored two service aces to tie the set at 21.

The teams traded points to make it 24-24, with kills from Tornetta and sophomore Erica Schultz contributing to Muhlenberg's scores. Haverford rallied to take the next two points and win the set.

The Mules fought in the fourth set to keep the match going, holding a 16-15 lead after another Tornetta kill. The Fords then rattled off seven straight points on their way to winning the match.

Glass finished with 13 digs to go with her nine kills, her fourth consecutive match with double-digit digs.
