Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day with Two Wins

The Muhlenberg volleyball team honored seniors Allison Glass and Elizabeth Garrison on Senior Day before handily defeating both Franklin & Marshall and Union by winning six of seven sets played.

The Mules (15-8, 5-2 CC) first won 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 against the Diplomats (15-7, 4-3 CC) in a battle for third place outright in the Centennial Conference standings. The team then battled to a 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 sweep of the Dutchwomen (17-10) in its second match.

Glass and sophomore Kelly Tornetta each finished with double-digit kills in both matches. Glass tallied 11 kills and 12 digs for a double-double in the first match, then followed with a team-high 12 kills and seven digs against Union. Tornetta led the Mules with 17 kills with only one error for a .314 hitting percentage against F&M before going for 10 kills in the second match.

With 23 kills on the day, Glass moved into seventh on the Mules' all-time kills list with 941 in her career. She also now has 868 digs in her career.

Sophomore Shannon Hubert finished the day with 60 assists and 32 digs, recording a double-double in both matches. Garrison led the Mules with 25 digs against the Diplomats and 13 digs against the Dutchwomen, moving her seven digs shy of climbing to fifth place on the all-time digs list (1,320).

Freshman Maggie Enestvedt also scored a double-double in the first match, tallying 14 kills and a career-high 19 digs to go with a team-high six blocks.

In the first match, the Diplomats and Mules went back and forth to start the first set, but two kills from Tornetta helped the Mules clinch the first set. Muhlenberg then hit .366 as a team in the second set, jumping out to an early lead and holding it to take the second stanza as well.

The Diplomats rallied in the third set despite Muhlenberg scoring four straight points to make it 23-19 after an Enestvedt kill. The Mules sustained their late momentum into the fourth set to take a commanding 10-4 lead before taking the final set on Tornetta's final kill.

In the second match, the Mules hit .311 as a team while holding the Dutchwomen to a .178 percentage. Up 12-9 in the first set, Muhlenberg went on a 9-3 run and eventually came away with the first set victory.

Union fell behind again in the second set but rallied to tie the score at 9-9 before Muhlenberg scored six of the next eight points. The Dutchwomen fought hard to make it a one-point difference but a service error ended the series in Muhlenberg's favor.

The Mules trailed 22-19 in the third set before an Enestvedt kill capped off a three-point streak that tied the set. Union answered with the next point, but a kill from Hubert followed by two Tornetta kills ended the match with a Mules victory.

Student assistant coach Emran Lallow was also honored as part of the pregame Senior Day festivities, as he will be graduating with Glass and Garrison in the spring.
