Men's Basketball Topples Defending Champs

Box Score

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team overcame a nine-point deficit in the final nine minutes to rally past defending Centennial Conference champion Dickinson, 58-54.

The second-half comeback was the second in four days for the Mules (5-5, 2-2), and again it was sophomore JeanLee Baez who came up big down the stretch. He had 13 points and seven rebounds in the second half alone and finished with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double.

Junior Jon Schreer led all scorers with 18 points.

Neither team led by more than five points in the closely contested first half, which ended with the Red Devils (2-9, 1-3) ahead, 21-20. The game remained tight through the first eight minutes of the second half, with Muhlenberg drawing even at 32-all on a free throw by junior Brandon LaRose.

Dickinson scored the next nine points to take the biggest lead of the game, 41-32 with 8:57 left. It was 43-36 with seven minutes to go before the Mules went on a 12-0 run to take control.

Baez (pictured above) scored five points during the run, two on a layup that tied the score at 43 with 4:46 to play. After a Red Devil miss, sophomore Nick Rindock grabbed the rebound and went the length of the court for a go-ahead layup.

Schreer, who entered the game as the Division III leader in three-point percentage, drilled his third straight at the 2:38 mark to extend the lead to 48-43.

After a Dickinson three cut the margin to two, Baez finished a post move while drawing a flagrant foul with less than a minute to play. Sophomore Owen McLeod completed the four-point possession with a pair of free throws, making the score 52-46.

Schreer made six of eight free throws in the final 32.7 seconds to preserve the win.

LaRose finished with nine points and a team-high three assists, and Rindock added eight points.

The Mules held the Red Devils 18 points below their scoring average and allowed only four offensive rebounds.
