Men's Basketball Returns with Comeback Win

Box Score | Video Recap (TV2)

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team set an upbeat tone for the second half of its season, coming back from a 12-point second-half deficit to defeat King's, 75-70.

Junior Jon Schreer, who entered the game ranked third in Division III in three-point shooting percentage, improved on his mark by going 5-for-8 from long distance en route to a game-high 17 points. He was 4-for-4 in the second half alone, leading a Mule team that shot 59.3 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Also scoring in double figures were junior Brandon LaRose with 14, sophomore Nick Rindock with 11 and freshman Erik Werheim with 12 to go along with eight rebounds in the best game of his young career.

Sophomore JeanLee Baez gave Muhlenberg (4-5) a big lift in the second half after sitting out the first, finishing with seven points and six rebounds and making several big plays down the stretch.

Playing for the first time in more than three weeks and the first time in Memorial Hall since before Thanksgiving, the Mules trailed 45-33 just over three minutes into the second half before making their move. Three threes by Schreer (pictured above) fueled a 13-2 run that cut the margin to one.

Muhlenberg eventually evened the score at 55 with 8:09 left when Rindock made a layup off a pass from Baez and took its first lead since 2-0 when Rindock drove in for a three-point play at the 6:33 mark.

The lead seesawed back and forth, with the Monarchs (6-6) opening up a three-point edge on a free throw with less than four minutes to play. Rindock's putback made it 66-65, and a Schreer three-pointer off a crosscourt pass out of the post by junior John Hunter put the Mules back on top, 68-66, with 3:06 on the clock.

King's came back to tie twice more, but both times Baez powered in for a layup to give Muhlenberg a two-point lead, the second at 72-70 with 1:06 left. On the next King's possession, Baez rebounded a missed free throw, and on the next Muhlenberg possession, he was fouled after going to the floor to chase down a rebound. Baez made one of two free throws to make it 73-70 with 21.9 seconds left. The Monarchs missed their next shot, and Rindock sealed the game with two free throws after snagging the rebound.

Werheim, who had season totals of four points and four rebounds coming into the game, helped carry the Mules in the first half, recording 10 points and six rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.
