Santone, Vallely Make History in Win

Senior Christina Santone and sophomore Brandi Vallely stamped their names into the record books as the Muhlenberg women's basketball team rolled past Stevens, 74-54.

Santone blocked six shots to become the Mules' all-time leader with 165 for her career. Already the program's record-holder for blocked shots in a game (7) and season (71), she broke the record set by Erin McSherry in 2009. Santone, who scored 11 points, also moved into the top 10 on the Centennial Conference all-time blocked shots list, climbing past four players (including McSherry) to land in seventh place.

Vallely finished with 16 points, 10 assists (with no turnovers) and 10 rebounds for her fourth triple-double of the season. That breaks the Division III record of three triple-doubles set by Mount Union's Suzy Venet in 1998 and ties the career mark shared by Venet (1995-98) and Lindsay Sydness of Principia (2009-12). Vallely, the Division III leader in assists per game, tied the mark in just 18 career games.

Although the win was not historic, it was quite impressive against a Stevens team that went 22-5 - including a win against Muhlenberg - and earned an NCAA Tournament bid last season. The Mules (12-1) led 29-9 after the first quarter and by 32 points (68-36) early in the fourth before the Ducks (10-5) scored some late points.

Brandi VallelySophomore Rachel Plotke also scored 16 points for Muhlenberg, and sophomore Christina Manning dropped in 14. Freshman Eva Sodaitis added eight.

The Mules scored the first nine points of the game, with Vallely scoring five and assisting on baskets that accounted for the other four. It was 17-9 with 2:40 left in the quarter before Muhlenberg closed out with a 12-0 blitz.

Vallely (pictured at left) had 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the first quarter alone. The Mules scored the first four points of the second quarter, extending their lead to 33-9, and did not turn the ball over until midway through the second.

Stevens closed to within 17 points before Plotke beat the first-half buzzer with a three-pointer to send Muhlenberg into the locker room up 44-24.

Mindful that they let a 16-point halftime lead slip away in their lone loss last week, the Mules stayed sharp at the start of the third quarter, opening with an 11-3 run to build their lead to 28.

Muhlenberg, which entered the game fourth in Division III in field-goal percentage defense, held Stevens to 28.8-percent shooting for the game.
