For most of the second day of the
Buttermaker Tournament, the Muhlenberg volleyball team was locked in tight, intense sets. Then there was the second set of the Neumann match.
The Mules won 25-3 in the middle set of a three-set sweep of the Knights, tying the school record for fewest points allowed since volleyball went to 25-point scoring in 2008.
The sweep gave Muhlenberg a third-place finish in the tournament following a 3-0 loss to Salisbury in its first match of the day. Salisbury went on to win the tournament for the third time in four years, defeating Stevenson in four sets in the championship match.
Senior
Katherine Boll was named to the all-tournament team for the third time in four career Buttermaker appearances.
In the Neumann match, the Mules (6-3) overcame an 18-13 deficit in the first set to win, 28-26. After the teams were tied at 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26, Muhlenberg finally ended the set by scoring the final two points on kills by senior
Sarah Weyhmuller and sophomore
Caroline Erb.
There was no such drama in the second set. After Neumann scored the first point on a service ace, the Mules got the serve back on a service error and did not let it go for a long time. With freshman
Brenna Littleson serving, Muhlenberg ran off 18 straight points. Littleson had three aces in the run, which also featured five kills by Weyhmuller.
Back-to-back Kills by Erb finished off the set in which the Mules hit .600 with 15 kills and no errors in 25 attempts. The only other time they won a set 25-3 was against NYU-Poly in 2012.
It was back to normal in the third set, with Muhlenberg pulling out a 25-23 win. Erb again finished off the set with a kill, one of a career-high 14 she had in the match. Weyhmuller and Boll ended with nine apiece.
The Mules tied a school record for a three-set match with 50 assists, paced by freshman
Shannon Hubert (24), senior
Vanessa Pulice (10) and junior
Elizabeth Garrison (8). Defensively, Garrison led the way with 22 digs and Littleson added 12.
All three sets were decided by five points or fewer in the Salisbury match. Junior
Allison Glass led the team with nine kills.
Boll
(pictured above) averaged 3.08 kills and hit .325 in four tournament matches.
