Alex Stone, a player and coach in one of the strongest Division III conferences for the previous eight years, joined the Muhlenberg College staff as an assistant men’s lacrosse coach in the summer of 2017. The defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, he was promoted to associate head coach in 2023.
In Stone's six seasons in Allentown, the Mules have compiled a record of 51-29 (.638), receiving votes in the national poll in five of the six seasons. The 2022 squad not only earned the program's first Centennial Conference playoff berth in 14 years, but it also led the CC in fewest goals allowed in league games.
The 2021 team went 4-2 in the CC, tying for second place in the league for the first time in program history. In 2018, Muhlenberg set a school record with 11 wins, earning the right to host the ECAC Tournament, and the 2020 team was off to a 5-0 start, outscoring opponents by more than a two-to-one margin, before the season was curtailed by Covid-19.
A Muhlenberg player was named CC rookie of the year in both 2019 and 2021.
Before coming to Muhlenberg, Stone was the head coach at Bard College for three seasons, following one year as an assistant. Guiding a fledgling program that achieved varsity status in 2013, Stone led the Raptors to a one-win improvement from the previous year in both 2016 and 2017 while competing in the Liberty League, a conference that had five of its eight teams receive votes in the final 2017 Division III poll.
In Stone’s first year as a head coach, Bard defeated Skidmore in just its fourth Liberty League game ever; a win that LaxPower.com rated as the biggest upset in Division III that year.
Stone coached three Bard players who received All-Liberty League awards, including rookie of the year in 2015, honorable mention selections in 2015 and 2017 and a second-team pick in 2016.
A native of Cranford, N.J., Stone played four years of lacrosse at Union College, helping the Dutchmen to one Liberty League championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was a crucial part of Union’s trip to the NCAA “Sweet 16” in 2011 and the “Elite Eight” in 2012. Stone earned All-Liberty League honors as a faceoff specialist twice and served as a team captain as a senior.
Stone, who graduated from Union with a degree in biology in 2013, was head coach for the East Coast Lacrosse Club in Edison, N.J., in the summers of 2012 and 2013 and has worked numerous camps and clinics. He received his master's in athletic administration from California University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
Stone received his Strength and Conditioning Certification from the National Federation of Professional Trainers in the summer of 2022.
