Three goals in the first 19 minutes - all by junior
Jocelyn Morgan - were all the Muhlenberg field hockey team needed to defeat Moravian, 3-2, in its home opener.
With the win, the Mules (1-1) retained possession of the Sodexo Cup, defeating their Lehigh Valley rivals for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings.
Morgan, who scored the lone Muhlenberg goal in the season opener at Scranton, took a pass from out wide from junior
Grace Koloras and slotted a shot inside the far post to open the scoring just 4:37 into the game.
Less than four minutes later, freshman
Madi Davis tackled the ball away from a Moravian player, dribbled around another Greyhound twice on her way to the circle, then fed Morgan, who converted up high.Â
Davis helped set up what proved to be the winning goal early in the second quarter, when her blast from the wing went off the foot of a Moravian player. On the ensuing penalty corner, Morgan finished a perfect give-and-go with sophomore
Isabella Margolis to make it 3-0.
Davis and Margolis both recorded their first career points.
The hat trick by Morgan was only the second in program history to come as early as the second game of the season. The first came last year, when
Haley Foster netted three goals at Moravian.
Muhlenberg took its three-goal advantage into halftime, but the Greyhounds (0-2) made a game of it by netting two third-quarter goals.
Although the Mules didn't extend their lead in the fourth quarter, they had the better of play for the majority of the period, outshooting Moravian 7-1 and clinching their first win of the season.
Sophomore
Brenna Fitzpatrick made 6 saves in goal to earn her second career win.
