On a day with mostly zeroes on the scoreboard, the Muhlenberg softball team rebounded from an 8-0 loss in the first game to gain a split with a 4-0 shutout of Franklin & Marshall in the nightcap.
Each team rode a big inning early - the Diplomats a seven-run second and the Mules a four-run first - and strong starting pitching to its win. It was the first time since 2009 that Muhlenberg split a Centennial Conference doubleheader that consisted of two shutouts.
For the Mules (18-8, 3-3), that strong starting pitching came from freshman
Eden Clark, who tied her career high with six innings pitched to earn her seventh win of the season. Clark
(pictured above) struck out seven and allowed only two hits.
After four no-hit innings, Clark gave up her first hit to lead off the fifth and walked the next batter. She defused the rally, however, by striking out the next three batters.
Sophomore
Abigail Kim worked a hitless seventh to complete the Mules' fourth shutout of the season.
Sophomore
Hailey Godin led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. After an infield error put runners on the corners, freshman
Izzy Wilmot laid down a bunt that scored Godin and reached base herself on a wild throw to first.
Junior
Lillie Teague followed with a two-run double just inside the third-base line, and junior
Skyla Campisi brought in the fourth run of the inning with a two-out single.
Teague added singles in the third and fifth to finish 3-for-3.
Muhlenberg managed only two baserunners in the opener, including a double by sophomore
Morgan Bobrowski. The Diplomats (10-12, 2-4) sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning to score seven of their eight runs. Junior
Josie Krieman struck out five in 3.1 innings of relief.
