Game Recap: Softball |

No-Hitter, Playoff Berth, Records for Softball

There was a lot of nothing and a lot of something in the Muhlenberg softball team's doubleheader sweep of McDaniel, 6-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the second.

The biggest nothing came in the nightcap, when freshman Eden Clark pitched a no-hitter for her second straight shutout. The righty struck out nine of the 16 batters she faced in recording the Mules' third no-hitter ever in a Centennial Conference game. Overall, it was the 13th no-hitter in program history, the first since Justine Bergara shut out King's without allowing a hit two years ago.

Clark walked the first batter she faced on four pitches but was perfect after that, retiring the next 15 hitters. She fanned six straight in one stretch between the first and third innings, coming within one of tying the school record for consecutive strikeouts.

Junior Josie Krieman delivered her own nothing in the opening game, hurling a four-hitter for her second shutout of the week. Krieman faced only five batters over the minimum, striking out a career-high seven against a Green Terror unit that entered with a .314 team batting average. She stranded runners on third in both the third and sixth innings and finished off her shutout with back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh.

Muhlenberg swept McDaniel last year, 11-0 and 2-0; it's the first time the Mules have blanked a CC opponent in consecutive doubleheaders.

That was the nothing. And the something?

• The Mules (28-8, 9-3) extended their winning streak to 11 games and clinched a CC playoff berth. They ran off 10 straight wins earlier in the season - it's the first time they've had two double-digit winning streaks in the same season. The 28 wins are the second-most in program history, topped only by the 2013 squad that finished 31-9-1.

• Muhlenberg stole eight bases in the opening game to break the school record of 107 steals in a season, set two years ago. The Mules added four more thefts in the nightcap, running their season total to 117.

• When sophomore Ava Storlazzi stole third base in the nightcap, it gave the Mules three players with at least 20 stolen bases, a program first. Sophomore Hailey Godin has 25 steals, and freshman Josie Hoffacker owns the team lead with 26 after notching four thefts against the Green Terror (12-19, 4-8).

Sofia Gallahue went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader, breaking the school record for hits by a freshman. She now has 51, topping the old mark of 50 set by Becki Toth in 2001. Gallahue (pictured above) capped a 4-for-4 game in the opener with a two-run triple and contributed to the stolen bases record by swiping three bags in the two games, matching her season total coming in.

After being set down without a run in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1, Muhlenberg plated at least one run in eight of its last nine innings.Freshman Izzy Wilmot had two singles, stole two bases, and scored twice in the opener, the second time on an unusual play. Wilmot was on second when junior Peri Kahn struck out on a pitch that got past the McDaniel catcher. She went to third on the wild pitch, then continued home after the catcher hesitated before throwing to first to complete the out.

Storlazzi led off the second game with a triple and scored the first run on a passed ball. Junior Lillie Teague hit two doubles, one that brought in two runs, and Kahn hit a two-run single.
