The first Centennial Conference baseball game at Bicentennial Park got off to an inauspicious start for Muhlenberg when Dickinson's leadoff batter hit the third pitch over the fence in left for a home run.
Most everything went the way of the home team after that, though. The Mules came back to notch their first CC win of the season, 21-9, in a game halted after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Key to the offensive outburst was a 15-run second inning in which Muhlenberg sent 20 batters to the plate. The 15 runs set a school record for a single inning, topping the previous mark of 13 set in the seventh inning of a 2011 game against Baptist Bible. It was the third-biggest inning ever in a CC game, topped twice by Haverford (19 vs. Washington College in 2023 and 16 vs. Gettysburg in 2016).
The Mules tied a school record with 11 hits in the big frame, and three of them came off the bat of sophomore
Steven Dimovski. He led off the inning with a single, hit a two-run single to bring in the sixth and seventh runs, and singled again as the second-to-last hitter in the inning. The three hits in an inning tied a Division III record, achieved 12 times previously but not since 2002 and never before by a CC player.
Dimovski, who was removed for a pinch-hitter with the Mules enjoying a big lead in the third inning, achieved the odd distinction of recording a three-hit game (the second of his career) while batting in only one inning.
Muhlenberg's other hitting star was sophomore
Jason Hughes, who tied a school record with eight RBI. Hughes, who entered the game with two career runs knocked in, matched that number by hitting a game-tying two-run homer, the first of his career, in the bottom of the first. He added a run-scoring ground ball and two-run single in the second and belted a three-run home run in the third. Hughes
(pictured above, facing camera) is the fifth Mule to drive in eight runs in a game, and the first since 2015.
Freshman
Matthew Lehberger also had multiple hits in the second inning, which featured back-to-back doubles to bring in three runs by senior
Thomas Pranzo and sophomore
Mike Carcich.
Sophomores
Sean Habeeb and
Marius Haughton each scored three runs in the game, while sophomore
Thomas Rorick went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.
In reaching the 20-run mark for the first time in a CC game since a 23-6 win against Dickinson in 2013, Muhlenberg continued to enjoy hitting in its new home park. In their five games at Bicentennial, the Mules have averaged 12.4 runs.
