A day after playing its first game at Bicentennial Park, the Muhlenberg baseball team spent more time at its new home - a lot more time.
The Mules played two high-scoring marathons in their first doubleheader at Bicentennial, dropping both ends to New Jersey City, 11-8 in the opener and 14-10 in the nightcap.
As they did in the Bicentennial opener, a 10-9 win against Penn State Berks, the Mules (3-9) gave up multiple runs in the top of the first but came back to take a lead.
In the first game, the fourth New Jersey City batter belted a three-run homer. Muhlenberg responded with a four-run second that featured a two-run single by freshman
Emmy Bulis.
The score stayed 4-3 until the sixth, when the Gothic Knights (5-5-1) scored twice to take the lead again, but the Mules tied the game at 5-all in the bottom of the seventh.Â
New Jersey City appeared to pull away with four in the eighth and two in the ninth. Muhlenberg pushed three runs across in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying runs on base when the final out was recorded.
Senior
Thomas Pranzo and sophomore
Steven Dimovski had three hits apiece in the opener.
The Mules put together three walks, two hit batters, and run-scoring singles by Pranzo and freshman
Danny Cutrupi to score six runs in the bottom of the second of the second game, erasing an early 3-0 NJCU lead.Â
After the Gothic Knights came back to tie the game at 6-all, Muhlenberg regained the lead with three in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Dimovski and Cutrupi.
New Jersey City went back in front for good with a five-run sixth inning.
Cutrupi, who entered the game with one hit in his short career, went 4-for-5 in the nightcap.
