The Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team scored the last four goals of the game to come from behind and post its biggest win of the season, 12-11 at 19th-ranked Cortland.
Freshman
Connor Sutton netted the game-winning goal with 8.4 seconds remaining for the Mules (4-4), who notched their first win against a nationally ranked team since a 12-11 overtime victory at 15th-ranked Gettysburg two years ago.
The Red Dragons (4-3), coming off back-to-back 12-goal wins - including one against Scranton, a team Muhlenberg lost to - scored a goal with 6:04 remaining to match their biggest lead of the game, at 11-8.
Back-to-back man-up goals by junior
Charlie Falk, the second with 2:26 remaining, brought the Mules back to within a goal, at 11-10.
Senior
Michael Drago won the ensuing faceoff, and with 1:21 left, sophomore
Luc Belvill drove in from the side and went top shelf to tie the game.
Drago won the next faceoff too, and Muhlenberg held for the final shot. With the seconds ticking down, junior
Daniel Friedel drove in from behind the cage and shook his defender with a spin move, but his shot hit the post. Sutton
(pictured above) jumped to collect the rebound and shot the ball in for his eighth goal of the season.
The ensuing faceoff resulted in a scramble for the ball, and although Cortland won it, time ran out and the Mules had their win.
Neither team led by more than one goal in the closely contested game until late in the third quarter, when Cortland scored twice in a span of 35 seconds to open up an 8-5 lead. The Red Dragons answered the next three Muhlenberg goals with goals of their own to keep the margin at three before the Mules began their final comeback.
Six players scored two goals apiece for Muhlenberg, with junior
Flynn Decker and freshman
Parker Kusko joining Falk, Sutton, Friedel, and Belvill. Junior
Chase Kusko recorded five assists, with four coming on consecutive second-half goals for the Mules, to move to within two of 100 for his career.
Senior
Jace Riley Day made 16 saves, including two big ones when Cortland was looking to extend its 11-8 lead.
