The Muhlenberg softball team parlayed 25 hits and 15 stolen bases into a home doubleheader sweep of Arcadia at Cedar Crest.
The Mules (6-2), who are in between their two Spring Break trips, won the first game 9-1 in six innings and completed the sweep by holding on for a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.
Muhlenberg tied a school record with eight stolen bases in the first game, equalling the mark set in 1979 vs. Moravian and tied in 1999 against Dickinson.
After leaving five runners on base in the first three innings of the opener, Muhlenberg finally broke through in the fourth, scoring three runs to open up a 4-1 lead. Freshman
Izzy Wilmot brought in the first run with a bases-loaded single, a second run scored on a ground ball, and junior
Lillie Teague hit a sacrifice fly for the final run.
The Mules broke the game wide open with a four-run fifth behind a two-run double by junior
Peri Kahn and a two-out, two-run single by sophomore
Hailey Godin.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, freshman
Josie Hoffacker singled up the middle to end the game by the eight-run rule.
Godin drove in four of Muhlenberg's eight runs, while Hoffacker
(pictured above) and freshman
Sofia Gallahue each went 3-for-4. Hoffacker and freshman
Kineta Bradley stole a pair of bases apiece.
Although she allowed her first run as a starting pitcher this season, sophomore
Morgan Bobrowski worked a solid five innings to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The second game was a more back-and-forth affair. The Knights, playing their first games of the season, came back twice, once to take a 3-1 lead in the second and then to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, four straight singles to start the frame by Godin, Teague, senior
Scooter Hulsen, and Gallahue brought home two runs. Senior
Maddy Svenningsen made it 7-4 with a sacrifice fly.
Arcadia threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh, scoring one run and loading the bases before junior
Josie Krieman came on in relief and threw two pitches - the second resulting in a groundout to first - to earn the save.
Godin was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases in the nightcap, while Hoffacker also had two hits and swiped two more bags.
