It's clear to see that the Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team is off to a great start.
For the second straight Wednesday, the Mules put in 20 goals, jumping out to an 11-0 lead en route to a 20-2 defeat of Misericordia.
It's only the third time in program history that the Mules (2-0) have scored 20 goals in back-to-back games, and the first time they've done it in the first two games of the season. *
Eleven different players contributed to the latest 20-goal outburst, led by junior
Emma Youngling with four. Senior
Ava Milia added three goals, while seniors
Annalisa Bio and
Danielle Sautner and freshman
Jane Sorger and
Samantha Kalinoglu all netted two. Sautner also recorded three assists, tying her career high of five points.
Freshman
Maddy Coen scored her first career goal, and junior
Ella Nagle, who wears number 20, scored goal number 20 late in the fourth quarter.
For the second straight game, Muhlenberg took a 1-0 lead in the first 30 seconds, with Milia driving in for a goal just 28 seconds after the opening draw. Sophomore
Halina Homiak made it 2-0 a minute into the game, and Bio
(pictured above) scored consecutive goals 39 seconds apart to double the lead to 4-0.
The Cougars (2-1) squandered a 4-0 advantage when the two teams played on the same field two years ago, but this time the Mules kept building their lead. They were up 7-0 before Misericordia had an offensive possession and led 9-0, with a 22-1 advantage in shots, at the end of the first quarter.
Kalinoglu scored her first goal early in the second quarter, and the game was played with a running clock the rest of the way.
Muhlenberg forced 24 turnovers and held the Cougars to eight shots. Junior
Audrey Cronk caused a pair of turnovers for a defense that has allowed a school-record seven goals in the first two games of the season. The previous low was 12 goals allowed in the first two games of the 2003 season.
* The other back-to-back 20-goal games for the Mules came in 2015 (20-15 vs. Swarthmore and 20-3 vs. Bryn Mawr) and 2010 (20-1 vs. King's and 20-10 vs. New England College).
