Game Recap: Football |

Football Stymied at Carnegie Mellon

The Muhlenberg football team could not get untracked against the top defense in the Centennial Conference and fell at Carnegie Mellon, 34-7.

The Tartans (5-2, 4-0), the lone undefeated team in the CC, came in allowing an average of only 272.5 yards per game. The Mules (4-3, 2-2) topped that ever so slightly, gaining 275, but could not get on the board until late in the fourth quarter.

Muhlenberg's defense allowed only 74 rushing yards on 29 attempts and forced two turnovers in the first half. CMU led only 3-0 before scoring its first touchdown in the final seconds of the second quarter, then threw a long TD pass on the first drive of the second half to extend its advantage to 17-0.

Junior Thomas Cerruti led the defense with 15 tackles, increasing his career total to 199. He also forced a fumble on a pass play that was recovered by junior Jake Saus.

Senior Aaron Sylvester intercepted a pass and forced a fumble, while junior Joseph Papa recorded 6 tackles, including his first sack of the season.

Junior Nicholas Humpf engineered Muhlenberg's lone touchdown drive, completing two fourth-down passes. He connected with sophomore Jack Waranavage for a 13-yard gain on fourth-and-10, then hit freshman Cody Arevalo (pictured above) in stride for a 26-yard touchdown on fourth-and-6 with 2:55 remaining.

Senior Amari Dunn led the Mules in both rushing yards (65) and receiving yardage (38), moving to within 17 rushing yards of 2000 for his career.

Freshman Jahmir Brown, who entered the game ranked 15th in Division III with an average of 29.1 yards per kickoff return, upped his average by bringing back five kicks for 150 yards.
