Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Stages Comeback

The Muhlenberg women's soccer team nearly erased all of a three-goal deficit but fell short to Gettysburg, 4-2.

The Bullets (5-2-2, 2-1) jumped on the Mules (3-5-1, 0-2) with three goals in the first 16:30.

Muhlenberg responded just 95 seconds after the third goal, however, off a long pass down the field from sophomore Sydney McManus. Freshman Madelyn Hill touched it to senior Anna May on her right, and May deposited the ball into the top of the net inside the far post for her first goal of the season.

It was the sixth career goal for May, giving her the lead among active Mule players, and gave her a goal against Gettysburg for the second straight year. It also snapped a streak of more than 400 minutes without a goal for the Mules.

The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the half, with senior Dani Klingener making a diving stop in the final minutes to keep Gettysburg from extending its lead.

Muhlenberg continued to battle back at the start of the second half. Sophomore Devon Cheeseman played a long ball to May, who chased it down outside the box and forced the Bullet goalie to extend to parry her shot over the net.

Cheeseman headed in the ensuing corner kick from freshman Kaylie Thran for her second career goal, making it a one-goal game.

That was as close as the Mules would get, however, and Gettysburg headed in a corner kick with less than 16 minutes remaining for some insurance.

Klingener finished with a career-high 12 saves, including some more diving stops in the second half.

The Mules have scored 11 goals through nine games this season, matching their season total in 18 contests last fall.
