The Muhlenberg men's soccer team continued its season-opening unbeaten streak with a 1-1 draw against FDU-Florham on a wet and dreary Tuesday evening.
The Mules scored their only tally courtesy of a
Sam Roberts penalty kick with a little over 10 minutes to go in the first half. Muhlenberg received that opportunity when
Gabe Blikshteyn was upended by a defender inside the Devils' 18-yard box. It was Roberts' second goal of the season and moved him into second on the team in points with seven. That score tied it at one, as the visitors were first to get on the board with a score from inside the Mules' 18-yard box in minute number 23.
Both teams had a fair number of chances in the offensive end in spite of what the score may suggest; Muhlenberg totaled 17 shots and 10 corner kicks to FDU-Florham's 10 shots and one corner kick. Of those 17 shots, five found the net.
The overarching theme of the night was the weather. It had been 34 years since these two programs had met, and Mother Nature decreed that it would be an extra 53 minutes before they resumed their rivalry, as thunder and lightning pushed the start time back to 7:53 p.m. Despite that wait, it was an intense and chippy battle throughout, with the Mules being given three yellow cards and the Devils being given one.
The all-time series between these programs now stands at 12-1-2 in favor of Muhlenberg, with all 14 contests other than this one being played in 1991 or earlier.
