The Muhlenberg softball team swept a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall, coming back from 3-0 deficits to win both games, 6-3, with the winning runs coming home in the seventh inning.
It was the first time in the 2000s that the Mules (16-12, 4-2) overcame a three-run deficit in each game of a doubleheader sweep.
Muhlenberg trailed 3-0 in the opener before scoring two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie it.Â
Senior
Kaya Mahy led off the top of the seventh with a single and stole second. After a single by junior
Scooter Hulsen, freshman
Ellie Williams brought in the go-ahead run with an infield single.Â
Graduate student
Gillian Zack plated Hulsen with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore
Skyla Campisi singled in the third run of the inning.Â
Freshman
Abigail Kim retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the first two hitters, to nail down the win. Kim pitched four innings in relief, allowing only three baserunners, in earning her fourth win of the season.
The Mules received even better relief pitching in the nightcap. Sophomore
Samantha Fehrenbach came on in the bottom of the first with two runs already in and the bases loaded with nobody out. Although Fehrenbach
(pictured above) walked in a third run, she went the rest of the way without allowing a run. The seven-inning outing was the second-longest by a relief pitcher in program history. Fehrenbach allowed only five hits and fanned three in her career-long stint, never allowing a runner who reached off of her to get past second base.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the seventh, Muhlenberg got one-out singles from Hulsen and Williams before a squeeze bunt single by Zack tied the game. After a single by sophomore
Lillie Teague loaded the bases, senior
Kaitlyn Buurman singled up the middle to bring in the go-ahead run.
Campisi capped the four-run outburst with a two-run single to left-center.
Teague and Campisi both went 4-for-8 in the twinbill, while Williams was 3-for-5.
