Football Cruises at Gettysburg for Seventh Win

A balanced offensive attack paced the Muhlenberg football team to its seventh win of the season, 59-27 at Gettysburg.

The win gave the Mules (7-2, 4-2) seven wins for the 15th consecutive season and moved them closer to their 21st postseason bid in the last 25 seasons.

In scoring their most points since a 62-7 win against Juniata in 2018, the Mules rolled up 582 total yards - 288 on the ground and 294 through the air. They scored four touchdowns rushing and four passing.

Sophomore Luke Spang had the best game of his career, completing 21 of 27 passes for a career-high 290 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half. Senior Aidan Mack caught four passes for 101 yards, becoming the third different Muhlenberg receiver with a 100-yard game this season.

The Mules scored on each of their first nine possessions and did not punt until the fourth quarter. They gained yardage in chunks, averaging 8.4 yards per play and not needing any more than nine plays for any of their scoring drives.

Spang and Mack teamed up for a 61-yard gain on the second play from scrimmage, giving Muhlenberg the ball at the Gettysburg 14, and on fourth-and-1 from the 5, junior Isaac Schaffer-Neitz carried in to open the scoring.

On Gettysburg's fifth play from scrimmage, junior CJ Newman forced a fumble on a pass play. Junior Jeffrey Lopez returned the fumble 15 yards into Gettysburg territory, and just four plays later, sophomore JR Walley ran in from 19 yards out for his first career touchdown.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, with senior Marcus McClaine breaking up a third-down pass, the offense found the end zone in nine plays, again scoring on fourth down on a 19-yard pass from Spang to senior John Runfolo. That made the score 21-0 less than 12 minutes into the game.

Sophomore Andrew Deutsch extended the lead to 24-0 by making his first career field goal, from 38 yards out, early in the second quarter. It was the longest field goal by a Mule kicker since 2019 and part of a perfect day for Deutsch, who was 8-for-8 on extra points in addition to his field goal.

Mack caught a 20-yard touchdown pass later in the second quarter, and freshman Caleb Pasols (pictured above) ended back-to-back Muhlenberg drives with 11-yard touchdown receptions, the second coming with just 15 seconds left in the half to send the Mules into the locker room with a 45-14 lead.

A second rushing touchdown for Schaffer-Neitz and an 8-yard scoring run by senior Dante Mahaffey in the third quarter closed out the Muhlenberg scoring.

Walley finished with 75 yards on only nine carries, while Schaffer-Neitz gained 72 yards. Mahaffey, making his debut as a running back, rushed for 52 yards on four carries and also recorded his first career pass reception, for 9 yards.

Sophomore Thomas Cerruti led the defense with 13 tackles, and senior Blaze Curry recorded a third-down sack to help set up the Mules' seventh touchdown.

Junior Nicholas D'Amico averaged 63.6 yards on his 10 kickoffs, with three touchbacks. The Bullets (0-9, 0-6) started only one of their 11 drives past their own 25, and six of them started inside the 20.
