The Muhlenberg baseball team had a busy two days, playing back-to-back road doubleheaders.
On Friday, the Mules were swept at Swarthmore, 10-0 and 19-4, and on Saturday, they dropped a pair at Gettysburg, 6-2 and 5-4.
Muhlenberg held late leads in both ends of the Gettysburg doubleheader. In the first game, senior
Ryan Friesen worked a stellar six innings, allowing no runs and only three hits while striking out 6. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth.
Friesen
(pictured above) left with a 2-0 lead, but the Bullets scored three times in both the seventh and eighth to pull out the win.
Sophomore
Thomas Pranzo drove in one of the Mule runs with a two-out single in the sixth. Senior
Ryan Riccio and junior
Brendan Hughes each had a pair of hits.
In the nightcap, Muhlenberg (6-17, 0-6) scored four times in the top of the fourth to open up a 4-1 lead. Freshman
Marc Quarrie and sophomore
JJ Foti hit RBI singles, and junior
Dylan O'Donnell capped the rally with a run-scoring triple.
As it did in the first game, Gettysburg rallied late, scoring once in the eighth to tie and walking off in the bottom of the ninth. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the ninth, the Mules went to a five-man infield, and the next batter hit a ground ball up the middle that was fielded by sophomore center fielder
Mason Mehling, who turned it into a rare 8-2 force at home plate. But the next batter walked to end the game.
Hughes worked a season-high 5.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs.
The Mules never led in the Swarthmore doubleheader, managing only eight hits in the two games. Quarrie had three of the hits, including an RBI double, and senior
Nick Belli drove in a run with a single.
