Softball Comes Back for Split

A late rally lifted the Muhlenberg softball team to a doubleheader split at Haverford.

The Mules (19-12, 6-6) gave up five runs in the first inning of the first game, and their comeback ended up one run short, 5-4. But in the second game, they overcame a 2-0 deficit with a four-run sixth and went on to win, 7-4.

The day was a historic one for senior Sophia Cicchetti, who tied two school records in addition to hitting a two-run homer. She scored three runs in the two games, matching the mark of 40 runs scored in a season, set in 2011, and she extended her hitting streak to 26 games, tying a record set in 2012.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning of the nightcap, Muhlenberg had runners on second and third with two outs when senior Gillian Zack hit a ground ball that the Haverford shortstop bobbled. The tying run scored on the error, and Cicchetti, who was on second, dashed around to score the go-ahead run.

Two batters later, junior Kaya Mahy delivered a two-run double to make it 6-3.

Cicchetti's RBI single in the top of the seventh negated a Haverford run in the bottom of the sixth. The Fords (8-20-1, 2-9-1) got their first two runners on in the last of the seventh, but junior Justine Bergara came on in relief to retire the final three hitters and earn her fourth career save.

Freshman Gabby Colder, the second of five Muhlenberg pitchers, picked up her first career win with two innings in relief.

Junior Ava Calabrese went 2-for-3 and scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the opening game, the Mules trailed 5-1 before Zack hit a solo home run - her second round-tripper in as many games - to lead off the second. Cicchetti (pictured above) cut the deficit to a run with a two-run shot in the fifth, but Muhlenberg did not score in the final two innings.
