Softball Opens with Conference Sweep

The Muhlenberg softball team opened up Centennial Conference play with a doubleheader sweep at Franklin & Marshall.

A trio of triples keyed the first game, a 7-5 win, while the two-hit pitching of senior Raya Kunes lifted the Mules (15-6, 2-0) to a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Muhlenberg trailed 1-0 in the opener and had two outs and nobody on before senior Sophia Cicchetti hit her 10th career triple, becoming the sixth Muhlenberg player to reach double digits. Five straight hits followed, including another triple by sophomore Scooter Hulsen, RBI singles by freshmen Peri Kahn and Skyla Campisi, and an RBI double by senior Gillian Zack, to give the Mules a 4-1 lead.

Kahn drove in another run with a single in the fourth and hit a run-scoring triple in the sixth to cap her 3-for-3 game.

The three triples tied the school record for a game, acheived six times previously, most recently in 2009.

The Diplomats (8-12, 0-2) plated two runs each in the fifth and sixth to close to within 7-5 and got the potential tying runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh. But sophomore Leeanna Zagrodnik retired F&M's leadoff batter on a fly ball to center to nail down the win, tying a school record with her third save of the season.

Junior Justine Bergara worked the first five innings to improve to 9-1 on the season. Senior Brianna Kessler went 2-for-3 with an RBI single.

The nightcap featured much less offense, as Kunes twirled her fourth career shutout. She allowed hits to two of the first six batters she faced but none after that. The Diplomats left the bases loaded in the second, and Kunes was in complete control after that, allowing only two baserunners in the final five innings.

The game was scoreless through five innings. Cicchetti led off the sixth with a single and was on second with two outs when senior Samantha Winegard (pictured above) delivered a pinch-hit double to bring in the first run of the game.

A two-out double by freshman Lillie Teague, her second hit of the game, plated an insurance run in the seventh.
