Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer

The Muhlenberg women's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 2-1 home win against Elizabethtown.

The result successfully inaugurated the Mules' newly resurfaced Varsity Field and the coaching tenure of Kathy Prescott.

Freshman Ivy Dias broke a 1-1 tie with just 1:42 remaining after executing a perfect give-and-go with senior Casie Burke. After receiving a lateral pass just outside the box from Burke, Dias one-timed a diagonal pass to Burke, then slipped behind Blue Jay defenders to finish Burke's end line cross with her left foot.

It was the latest game-winning goal in regulation for the Mules since 2013, when a goal with 15 seconds left provided the margin in a 1-0 win at Dickinson. Muhlenberg hadn't scored a winning goal in the last two minutes of regulation in a home game since 2003.

Dias also was the first Mule freshman to score a goal in the opening game of a season since 2015.

Burke scored the first goal of the game, snapping a scoreless tie 2:39 into the second half. Elizabethtown netted the equalizer 13 minutes later.

Muhlenberg returned to the pitch one day after its opening win, traveling to Rowan for its first road game of the season. The Profs, who were 14-1-4 last year and received votes in the Division III preseason poll, scored three goals in the first 20 minutes and went on to a 3-0 win. Junior Sara Pecorelli made 7 saves.
