Baseball Sweeps Albright

The Muhlenberg baseball team won 13-2 in the first game and 7-4 in the second to sweep a doubleheader at Albright.

Although the Mules (3-1-1) scored 20 runs in the two games, it was their pitching that was the most impressive. Five Muhlenberg hurlers combined to allow only three earned runs in 14 innings in the two games.

In the opener, senior Quinn Rovner allowed hits to four of the first five batters, bringing in two runs, but settled in and did not allow any more runs in his six-inning stint. His first strikeout, in the fifth, was a big one, a called third strike with the bases loaded and one out.

After letting the first two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, senior Gabe Spiegel (pictured above) got a double play and a groundout on consecutive pitches to seal the game.

The Mules backed the pitching with a 14-hit attack, plating all of their season-high 13 runs in the odd-numbered innings. Sophomores Aidan Legner and Brendan Hughes each drove in three runs, and juniors Jack Kent and Jonathan Toth hit two-run doubles in the third and seventh, respectively.

Junior catcher Ryan Friesen went 2-for-4 and threw out a runner attempting to steal.

Sophomore Jayden Barroqueiro made his first start of the season in the nightcap and was nearly unhittable, allowing only a bunt single in his three innings. Hughes pitched the fourth, fifth and sixth, giving up only one run, to earn the win.

Junior Nick Stannard singled in a run in the first inning, and that stood up as the lone score until the fifth, when senior Caleb Tereska hustled out a pop-fly double and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jake Braet.

Muhlenberg blew the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs on three Albright errors, three consecutive bases-loaded walks, a dropped infield fly and just one hit - a bunt single by Legner.
