The Muhlenberg baseball team played its first tie in nine years, drawing Lebanon Valley 7-7 in a game called after eight innings due to darkness.
Although it had no winner, the game ended on a dramatic note. The Dutchmen (0-3-1) put runners on first and third with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman
Evan Virno, making his first career pitching appearance, kept the winning run on third with two fly balls to shallow right field. After the next batter walked, Virno struck out what would be the final hitter of the game on a 3-2 pitch.
Virno pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing only one run on two hits.
The Mules (1-1-1) scored all their runs between the third and sixth innings, tying the game at 1-1 when a run scored on a wild pitch in the third.Â
In the fourth, senior
Caleb Tereska singled down the line to give Muhlenberg its first lead, and junior
Jack Kent followed with a long double to center to bring in two more runs.
Tereska
(pictured above) extended the lead to 6-1 when he hit his third career home run, a two-run blast, in the fifth.
Lebanon Valley tied the game with a five-run bottom of the fifth. Junior
Jonathan Toth hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to put the Mules back in front, a 7-6, but the Dutchmen tied it back up in the bottom of the inning.
Junior
Ryan Friesen started for Muhlenberg and allowed only one run in four innings.Â
