Softball Ends Trip with Two Wins

The Muhlenberg softball team put on its hitting shoes on its last day in Myrtle Beach.

The Mules (6-6) scored 21 runs on 23 hits in sweeping Maine-Presque Isle, 12-4, and Mass.-Boston, 9-4, to finish 5-3 in South Carolina.

Muhlenberg scored in nine of its 11 at-bats, doing it with slugging (seven doubles in the two games) and speed (10 stolen bases in the two games).

Junior Sophia Cicchetti went 4-for-6 with 5 runs scored and 3 stolen bases in the two games. Sophomore Kaya Mahy hit two doubles in the first game, and junior Gillian Zack contributed a pair of two-baggers in the second game.

Twelve different Mules either scored or drove in a run against Maine-Preque Isle. Sophomore Ava Calabrese hit RBI singles in the second and fourth, and senior Sara Fallon drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and bases-loaded walk.

Muhlenberg trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the third, but went ahead on an RBI single by Zack and an RBI double by Mahy (pictured above). The Mules scored four times in the fourth to go ahead 9-4, then triggered the eight-run rule with three runs in the fifth. Junior Dara DiMaiolo brought in the first two with a pinch-hit single, and the final run scored on an error.

Junior Isabella Fogle pitched 1.2 innings in relief to earn her second win of the trip.

Against Mass.-Boston, Muhlenberg broke open a 1-1 game with a six-run third. The Mules began the inning with four straight hits – a double by freshman Scooter Hulsen and consecutive singles by Cicchetti, sophomore Kaitlyn Buurman and freshman Maddy Svenningsen. Mahy hit a two-run single later in the inning, and junior Samantha Winegard capped the outburst with an RBI single.

Zack doubled and scored in the fourth and drove in a run with a double in the sixth.

Junior Raya Kunes and sophomore Justine Bergara combined for the pitching duties, with Bergara earning her second save of the season.
