The Muhlenberg women's basketball team clinched a Centennial Conference playoff berth with a 77-71 double-overtime win at Ursinus.
With one game left in the regular season, the Mules (12-12, 11-8) are locked into fifth place in the CC. They will travel to Haverford for a first-round game on Tuesday, February 21.
Sophomore
Emily Vaughan led Muhlenberg with a career-high 22 points. Graduate student
Margaux Eripret added 21 points, giving the Mules two 20-point scorers for the first time in five years.
Eripret added 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Sophomore
Ava Connolly recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Neither team led by more than eight points in regulation. The Bears (9-15, 6-13) scored on a putback with 2.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 53 and overcame a nine-point deficit in overtime to tie the score at 67 on a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left.
The second overtime was tied at 71 with less than a minute to play when junior
Caroline Horst rebounded her own missed shot – her 12th rebound of the game – and kicked the ball back out. With the shot clock winding down, sophomore
Emily Unger drove into the lane and drew a blocking foul. She made both free throws with 24.9 seconds left to put Muhlenberg ahead for good.
On the other end, the defense of Eripret and Horst forced an Ursinus player to travel. Sophomore
Rachel Saxton and Vaughan combined to go 4-for-4 in the remaining seconds to ice the win.
The win was the first for the Mules in a multiple-overtime game since 2000, when they defeated Gettysburg in double overtime.
