The Muhlenberg women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip-Off Tournament with a 57-48 win against Eastern Connecticut State.
The Mules, who are 4-0 for the first time in five years, will face host Westfield State, an 83-57 winner against Regis, in the final.
A 17-4 first-half run gave Muhlenberg a 31-17 lead midway through the second quarter. The Warriors (1-1), who won 22 games and earned an NCAA Tournament berth last year, could not get closer than eight points in the third quarter and entered the final period down by 10.
The Mules made only one field goal in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, however, and saw their lea shrink to four, at 49-45. After a timeout, junior
Ava Connolly took a handoff from junior
Megan Winters and slipped behind her screen to drain a three from the wing.
On the next possession, junior
Rachel Saxton jumped the passing lane for a steal an layup that gave Muhlenberg some breathing room at 54-45.
Eastern Connecticut made a three on its next possession to draw to within six, but another steal by Saxton led to the dagger, a three from the wing by junior
Emily Unger with 1:47 left for the final points of the game.
Unger
(pictured above) led all scorers with 17 points, while Saxton scored 10 to go along with 4 steals. Connolly finished with 8 points and 4 assists with only one turnover.
Senior
Caroline Horst had a good all-around game with 7 points, 6 rebounds and a career-high 5 assists.
Two of the Mules' four wins to start the season have come against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament in March.
