The Muhlenberg football team forced five turnovers in the rain in a 41-13 win at Gettysburg.
The Mules, ranked 17th by the AFCA and 21st by D3football.com, improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2019 and remained one of three undefeated teams in the Centennial Conference, along with their next two opponents, Dickinson and Johns Hopkins.
Muhlenberg scored two touchdowns off turnovers in a span of 56 seconds to break open a close game in the second quarter.
The Bullets (2-4) returned a blocked punt for a touchdown early in the second quarter to close to within 13-6 and got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead after forcing Muhlenberg to punt. But on the first play after the punt, senior
Matt Papa forced a fumble that was recovered by graduate student
Dominick Visintin to give Muhlenberg the ball at the 28-yard line.
Three plays later, junior
Joe Repetti hit sophomore
Amari Dunn in the end zone with a 4-yard touchdown pass.
Gettysburg tried a lateral on the ensuing kickoff but fumbled the exchange, and sophomore
Marcus McClaine dove on the ball at the Bullet 12. Three plays after that, Repetti connected with senior
James Nye for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 28-6.
The defense made the lead stand up even though the Bullets drove into Mule territory on four of their remaining five drives. Senior
John Lohrer broke up a pass near the goal line on the final play of the first half, and seniors
Tyler Ekstrom and
Alex Jr. Batista recorded interceptions in the Red Zone to end second-half drives. It was the second career interception for Ekstrom and the fourth for Batista
(pictured above).
The lone touchdown allowed by the Muhlenberg defense came on a long touchdown pass on the Bullets' last offensive snap of the game.
Ekstrom led the defense with 8 tackles, adding a tackle for a 4-yard loss to his interception, while Visintin finished with 7. Lohrer tied a school record, achieved eight times previously, with his 4 pass breakups.Â
Repetti threw for only 125 yards in the wet conditions but did run for a game-high 79 and toss four touchdown passes. The first one came on fourth-and-6 late in the fourth quarter and went for 32 yards to junior
Joshua Castro, who recorded his first career touchdown.
Dunn scored the Mules' second touchdown on a thrilling 22-yard run late in the first quarter in which he broke two tackles with a spin move. Sophomore
Matthew Manning rushed for an 18-yard score, and senior
Timothy Buda capped the Muhlenberg scoring with a 6-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter, capping a 12-play, 95-yard drive.Â
The Mules rushed for a season-high 222 yards, with Repetti, Dunn (57) and Manning (55) all gaining at least 50 yards.
