Volleyball Sweeps Again

The Muhlenberg volleyball team recorded its second home sweep in as many nights, blanking Moravian in a match bracketed by two long runs.

The Mules (5-2) took the three sets 25-9, 25-14 and 28-26 to defeat their Lehigh Valley rivals for the eighth time in the last nine meetings.

Freshman Christina Marcin led Muhlenberg with 17 kills, one off the career high she set in Tuesday's sweep of Hunter. Sophomore Esmae Oehler added 8 kills, while sophomore Rachel Jacobs finished with 7 kills and 3 blocks. Junior Alyssa Faville had 20 digs, reaching that mark for the fourth time in seven matches this season, while senior Caleya Tereska recorded 9 digs and served 4 aces.

Muhlenberg opened the match by scoring the first 10 points, forcing the Greyhounds (5-2) to use both of their timeouts before they had scored a point. None of the 10 points came on Moravian errors; one was on a block and the other nine were kills, including four by Oehler (pictured above).

It was 19-4 before Moravian scored some late points to make the final score more respectable. Still, it was only the third time since the start of 25-point scoring that the Mules held the Greyhounds to single digits in a set. Muhlenberg hit .455 in the set, scoring 18 of its 25 points on kills.

The Mules continued their hot hitting in the second set, recording 17 kills behind the passing of senior Emma Eglinton, who finished the match with 30 assists.

Looking to stay alive in the match, Moravian jumped out to a 22-13 lead in the third set before Muhlenberg finished out the match with a rousing 15-4 run. Trailing 24-16, the Mules scored nine straight points behind the serving of junior Julia Ficon and the hitting of Marcin to take a one-point lead. The teams traded points from there until the Greyhounds committed back-to-back attack errors at 26-all to end the match.
