Softball Sweeps into Playoffs

The Muhlenberg softball swept Washington College on the final day of the regular season to clinch a Centennial Conference playoff berth.

The Mules (19-19, 10-6) won 3-0 and 5-0 to earn the second seed in the CC playoffs. They will host third-seeded McDaniel in a first-round game on Tuesday, with the rest of the double-elimination tournament taking place at Swarthmore next Friday and Saturday.

Sophomore Raya Kunes and senior Cora Bridgers combined to allow only 13 hits in the twin shutouts. Kunes scattered eight hits in the opener for her second shutout in her last three starts, while Bridgers twirled a five-hitter for her ninth career shutout.

Kunes helped her own cause when she led off the third inning with a single. Two outs later, senior Genna Cicchetti singled in sophomore pinch-runner Jane Banahan with the first run of the game.

The Shorewomen (16-19, 8-8), who also were playing for a playoff berth, came close to tying the score in the top of the fifth, but freshman Kaya Mahy made a tremendous play with two outs and a runner on third, ranging far to her left to snag a ground ball and throwing across her body to nip the batter at first.

Muhlenberg extended its lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run single by senior Kristin Oberg.

Defense again preserved the shutout in the top of the sixth. Washington had the bases loaded with one out before freshman Kaitlyn Buurman started an inning-ending 3-2-3 double play.

Kunes fielded a comebacker with two runs in scoring position in the seventh to end the game.

Cicchetti (3), Oberg (3) and Kunes (2) combined for eight of the Mules' nine hits in the first game.

The second game followed a similar script, with Muhlenberg adding on late runs to break open a tight game. Senior Madison Palat singled in the first run of the game in the fourth, and the score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth.

Palat brought in the first of four runs in the sixth with her second RBI single, and three additional runs came in on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, a groundout and an infield error.

Bridgers stranded two runners in scoring position in the first and allowed only two more runners to reach scoring position for the rest of the game. She struck out four.

Oberg, who came into the game with two three-hit games in her career, made it two on the day by going 3-for-3 again in the nightcap. Buurman also had three hits.

Prior to the games, the Mules honored seniors Palat, Natalie Smith, Cicchetti, Madison Amdur, Sarah Karmazyn, Oberg, Sarah Raab and Bridgers.
