Game Recap: Baseball |

Toth Ties Longball Record

The last home game of the season for the Muhlenberg baseball team came with some history.

Sophomore Jonathan Toth hit his 11th home run of the season in the fifth inning of the Mules' 18-9 loss to regionally ranked Swarthmore, tying a school record set 14 years ago by recent Hall of Fame inductee Christian Conti '09. He will have a chance to break the record in Saturday's season-ending doubleheader at McDaniel.

And that wasn't all. The next batter, senior Danny Monzo, also hit a home run, giving Muhlenberg back-to-back homers for only the second time ever in a Centennial Conference game.

The last time the Mules hit back-to-back home runs came in 2019 against Drew, when they hit three in a row. Senior Trevor Virno was part of that bit of history, and it almost repeated. Virno followed Toth and Monzo's blasts with a long drive that two-hopped the fence in left-center. He had to settle for a double.

The fifth-inning power show put a positive note on a game in which Muhlenberg trailed by seven runs before it ever came to bat. The first-place Garnet (20-16, 13-3) scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings and led 16-1 before the Mules scored five in the fifth.

Virno and fellow seniors Ryan Hebert and Connor Mikulski each had two hits in their final appearance at Cedarcreek Field for the Mules (15-20, 4-12), while junior Caleb Tereska hit a pair of doubles.

Senior Brian Martorano (pictured above), the sixth Muhlenberg pitcher, threw a scoreless ninth, striking out two.
