Baseball Powers to Win in Florida Finale

Two two-run homers powered the Muhlenberg baseball team to a 10-8 win against Middlebury in its final game in Florida.

The Mules (9-3) won four of seven games on the trip against some strong competition. The Panthers were 26-13 and came within one win of earning an NCAA Tournament bid in 2019, their last complete season.

Muhlenberg got contributions up and down the roster and there was no better example than senior Connor Mikulski, who made his first start of the season and just the third of his career against Middlebury. In his first at-bat of the game, one batter after senior Thomas Rodgers hit an RBI single in the top of the second, Mikulski launched a drive over the fence in left-center for his second career hit - a two-run homer.

The Mules added two more runs in the inning on a Middlebury throwing error to make it 5-0. The margin was still five runs, at 6-1, in the top of the sixth when sophomore Jonathan Toth hit his third home run of the season with a teammate on base.

Junior Jake Swerdloff singled in a run in the top of the seventh, extending the lead to 9-1.

Junior Quinn Rovner came out to pitch in the bottom of the seventh, having given up only three hits to that point, but left after giving up a pair of doubles. He fanned six in his six-plus innings of work to improve to 4-0 on the season and become the first Mule pitcher this century to win his first four starts. The only other Muhlenberg hurler to start a season 4-0 was Christian Ferlan in 2012, but one of his wins came in relief.

Middlebury scored four runs in the seventh to close to within 9-5, then hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth to draw within a run.

Senior Will Nomura came in from the bullpen to get the final out of the eighth, and the Mules got an insurance run in the ninth on a pinch-hit bases-loaded walk by senior Ryan Gilbert.

Nomura allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth but, with the help of a diving catch in center by senior Ryan Hebert, retired the next three hitters to nail down his second save of the season.

Mikulski added a bunt single and a stolen base, while freshman Aidan Legner went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Toth and sophomore Jack Kent recorded a pair of hits apiece.
