The Muhlenberg baseball team opened the 2022 season in historic fashion, capturing the Gallaudet Bison Classic with three decisive wins.
After defeating Cazenovia 13-3 on the first day of the tournament, the Mules completed their perfect weekend with wins against RIT (13-5) and Gallaudet (10-4). It's the first time the Mules have started a season 3-0 snce 2018, and the first time they've scored at least 10 runs in each of their first three games since 2012.
The last time Muhlenberg won each of its first three games by at least five runs? That hadn't happened since 1927.
The Mules got off to a good start, scoring six runs in the top of the first against RIT (2-1), and never looked back. A bunt single by freshman
Brendan Bussiere in his first career at-bat sparked the six-run outburst, which featured only one run-scoring hit - an RBI single by sophomore
Jack Kent in his second at-bat of the inning. Muhlenberg took advantage of a throwing error, two bases-loaded walks and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Bussiere added an RBI double in the third and a two-run double in a five-run ninth, going 3-for-6 in his collegiate debut. Every player in the starting lineup either scored or drove in a run, with sophomore
Jonathan Toth knocking in two. Junior
Caleb Tereska had a pair of hits and scored two runs.
Senior
Will Nomura pitched the final six innings in relief to earn the win. He pitched five scoreless frames to start his stint, facing only two batters over the minimum, before allowing two runs in the ninth.
The two big innings - six runs in the first and five in the ninth - bookended the RIT game, but the Mules spread their scoring around more against Gallaudet, plating runs in six of eight innings.
The offensive output made a winner of freshman
Jayden Barroqueiro, who was impressive in his collegiate debut. The southpaw pitched six innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out eight.
Junior
Christian Schwarz led the offense by going 4-for-5, scoring three runs, driving in two and tying a school record with three doubles. He drove in Muhlenberg's first run with a double in the bottom of the first and scored after doubling in the seventh and eighth. Schwarz is the sixth player in program history with three two-baggers in a game.
Senior
Danny Monzo went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Toth, sophomore
Nick Whelan (pictured above) and junior
