The Muhlenberg men's basketball team ended its 2021-22 season with an 83-81 loss at Washington College.
The Shoremen (5-20, 2-16) made two free throws with 5.7 seconds left to provide the winning margin and send the Mules (9-16, 6-12) to their sixth Centennial Conference loss by six points or fewer this season.
Five Muhlenberg players scored in double figures, led by junior
Tommy McGuire with 15 points. Seniors
Noah Watson,
Nicholas Chudy and
Dallas Hoffman, all playing in their final game, netted 14, 12 and 11, respectively, and sophomore
Giovanni Rubino also finished with 11 points.Â
The Mules went on an early 12-0 run that featured three-pointers by Hoffman
(pictured above) and fellow senior
Nate Henty Brown. The trey was the 100th of Hoffman's career, making him the 20th Muhlenberg player, and the second this season, to reach the century mark. Henty Brown was the first.
Muhlenberg went dry from beyond the arc after its early success, however, shooting just 5-for-23 from the game, including 0-for-9 in the second half.
Washington, meanwhile, connected on 12 of its 23 three-point tries and was able to shoot itself back into the game, erasing an 11-point Muhlenberg late in the first half to take a 48-47 lead four minutes into the second half.
Neither team led by six points in the final 16 minutes, which featured six lead changes and four ties. The final deadlock came at 81-81 when Rubino made two free throws with 32.7 ticks on the clock. The Shoremen held the ball for a final shot and attempted a three that was missed, but the Mules were called for a foul on the shooter.
Washington made two of three free throws, and a last-second Muhlenberg attempt fell short.
Three days after recording his first career double-double, McGuire came close to another one, pulling down 8 rebounds. Watson added 6 assists and 5 rebounds to his 14 points, while Rubino (4) and freshman
Luke Gordos (5) combined for 9 assists without a turnover.
