Seniors scored the first eight points and the Muhlenberg men's basketball team went on to beat Franklin & Marshall, 73-67, on Senior Day.
Senior
Dallas Hoffman led the Mules (8-15, 5-11) with 16 points and classmates
Nate Henty Brown,
Noah Watson and
Nicholas Chudy added 8, 7 and 5, respectively, combining for nearly half of their team's points. The four were honored prior to the game along with
Dan Gaines, who suffered a season-ending injury in January.
Sophomore
Giovanni Rubino gave his older teammates a big boost with 15 points and a career-high 9 assists.
Hoffman and Chudy hit threes on the first two possessions, and Muhlenberg never gave up the lead. The Mules led 10-7 before going on a 9-2 run, which included a long delay due to a serious injury suffered by an F&M player, to extend its margin to double digits.
Muhlenberg built its advantage to as many as 18 points, 45-27, early in the second half. The Diplomats (8-15, 5-11) got to within single digits at the 12-minute mark and eventually cut the gap to five with 6:30 left. A pair of free throws and two defensive stops later, Watson corralled an offensive rebound and whipped the ball to Rubino, who knocked down a three to give the Mules a double-digit lead again.
F&M was within six heading into the final minute, but Muhlenberg broke the press and Rubino found Hoffman for an uncontested layup that clinched the win.
Watson finished with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Juniors
Justin Allen and
Tommy McGuire combined for 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
