Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls in Closing Seconds

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team fell at DeSales, 68-67, on a basket with 5.4 seconds left.

Four players scored in double figures for the Mules (6-2), who overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half to take a late lead.

Junior Giovanni Rubino led Muhlenberg with 16 points, while sophomore Jayson Williams-Johnson added 12. Sophomore Luke Gordos and junior Brandon Goldberg both came off the bench to shoot 4-for-5 from the field, with Gordos tying his career high of 11 points and Goldberg (pictured above) setting a career best with 10 points.

The Mules trailed 48-40 with 13 minutes to play before an old-fashioned three-point play by graduate student Dan Gaines and a three-pointer by sophomore Charlie Gillikin cut the gap to two.

Muhlenberg stayed within striking distance for the next eight minutes and finally took the lead at 64-62 with 3:53 remaining when Rubino drove baseline with the shot clock running down and whipped the ball up top to Gillikin for a three.

The Bulldogs (8-2) tied the score with under two minutes to play, but Gillikin beat the shot clock again with a three-pointer to give the Mules a 67-64 edge.

Trailing 67-66, DeSales missed a potential go-ahead shot with 12.6 seconds left, but the rebound went out of bounds off a Muhlenberg player. The Bulldogs made good on their second try, and the Mules' final attempt was off the mark.

The Mules shot 50.0 percent against DeSales, which entered the game ranked 23rd in Division III in scoring defense. Though held to 5 points, Gaines dished out a season-high 7 assists.

Muhlenberg's two losses are by five points in overtime and by one point, both on the road to teams with a combined record of 16-3.
