Wrestling Splits Four at Scotty Wood

The Muhlenberg wrestling team split four matches at the Scotty Wood Duals.

The Mules (4-2) won their first and third matches, defeating Camden, 41-9, and Temple, 60-0. They lost to two teams in the top 20 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association tournament team rankings - No. 17 Johnson & Wales (33-10) and No. 12 Alvernia (25-15).

Sophomore Anson Dewar led the Mules with three wins in contested bouts at 174. Junior Ricky Caamano also picked up three wins, and freshman Trey Miletics recorded a pair of pins.

Muhlenberg won eight of 10 bouts against Camden, highlighted by first-period pins by Caamano at 133 and senior Greg Grigorian at 197. Grigorian (pictured above) was making his first career appearance after battling injuries the last three years, and it was a brief appearance, as he needed only 37 seconds to flatten his opponent.

Senior Jeorcy Peña also recorded a pin in the Camden match.

The Mules won three bouts against both Johnson & Wales and Temple, but there were only three in the latter match, with seven matches resulting in forfeits. Sophomore Brian McCaw (125), Miletics and sophomore Fletcher Goodman (184) recorded pins in the three contested bouts.

The last match of the day, against Alvernia, was the most exciting. Junior Joey Lamparelli started at 125 with a rematch against an opponent who defeated him in a tiebreaker two weeks ago at the season-opening Alvernia Invitational. This time it was Lamparelli scoring a takedown with 48 seconds left in the third period to pull out a 3-2 win.

Caamano's 8-5 decision in an intense 133-pound bout gave Muhlenberg a 6-0 lead, but the Golden Wolves captured the next four bouts to open up an 18-6 lead.

After Dewar's third win, freshman Ryan Fairchild scored a dramatic pin against the eighth-ranked 184-pounder in Division III. Wrestling an opponent who had beaten him by major decision two weeks prior, Fairchild was trailing 5-1 midway through the second period when his took his opponent down and pinned him.

That made the score 18-15, but Alvernia won the final two bouts to secure the win.

Sophomore Nico Berlingeri went 2-1, falling only to the second-ranked 165-pounder in Division III. McCaw also went 2-1 with a major decision and a pin and had a respectable showing against the sixth-ranked 125-pounder in Division III, dropping a 13-7 decision.
