The Muhlenberg field hockey team scored early in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat Gettysburg, 2-1.
Facing an upcoming stretch of three straight road games, including two against Centennial Conference co-leaders Bryn Mawr and Johns Hopkins, the win strengthened the playoff hopes of the Mules (5-6, 3-2) with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Muhlenberg won despite being on the defensive for most of the first three quarters. The Bullets (2-9, 0-5) had advantages of 18-7 in shots and 13-3 in penalty corners in the first 45 minutes, but the game remained tied due to the work of the defense and sophomore goalie
Grace Leard, who made 7 saves.
The script flipped in the first minute of the fourth quarter after sophomore
Mikayla DeMichele intercepted a Gettysburg pass near midfield. She passed into the circle to freshman
Abba Diglio, whose pass across the goal mouth was converted by freshman
Erin DiSandro for the go-ahead goal.Â
The Mules did not allow another shot or penalty corner after taking the lead.
Senior
Mallory Holson opened the scoring on Muhlenberg's only shot of the first quarter, putting the ball in the cage after dribbling past the Gettysburg goalie from the right side. The Bullets tied the game off a penalty corner in the second quarter.
