The Muhlenberg field hockey team battled tough in its final home game, falling to Franklin & Marshall 2-1 in double overtime.
The Diplomats (12-4, 8-1), ranked 16th in Division III, scored with 4:11 on the clock to hand the Mules (5-11, 3-7) their second double-OT home loss in the last four days. ,
Although Muhlenberg closed its Centennial Conference schedule with five straight losses, four of the five came by one goal, with three of those coming to CC playoff qualifiers, two of which are nationally ranked.
The dramatic ending would not have been possible without the incredible debut of junior
Cathy Barrish, who played her first career game in goal and made 10 saves. Among them was a stop of a breakaway in the first overtime.
Held without a shot or a penalty corner in the first half, Muhlenberg took advantage of its first opportunity two minutes into the second half when junior
Nicole Randazza blasted in a shot from the wing for her fourth goal of the season.Â
Randazza also had an outstanding game at the other end of the field, leading a defense that held F&M to one goal through the first 75 minutes.
Before the game, seniors
Mallory Holson and
Kaitlyn Hennelly were honored along with Randazza, who is leaving Muhlenberg after three years to go to dental school.
