The Muhlenberg men's basketball team made a successful belated 2022 debut, leading almost from start to finish in a 61-52 win at Dickinson.
The Mules (4-7, 1-3), playing for the first time in more than three weeks following three postponements, received noteworthy performances from freshman
Jayson Williams-Johnson and senior
Nate Henty Brown in picking up their first Centennial Conference win of the season.
Williams-Johnson scored a career-high 25 points, setting a school record by going 6-for-6 on three-pointers. No Muhlenberg player had ever been perfect from behind the arc with more than five attempts.
Henty Brown notched his fifth career double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds – the most boards by a Mule in nine years.
Williams-Johnson
(pictured above) made three three-pointers in the first 4:16 to account for all the early scoring as Muhlenberg jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Â
The Red Devils (3-8, 2-4) came back to take the lead briefly at 14-13, but back-to-back three-pointers from Williams-Johnson and Henty Brown – the latter from way behind the line – kicked off a 9-0 run that gave the Mules a 25-16 lead late in the first half.
Muhlenberg held Dickinson without a field goal for the final 11:37 of the half and went into the locker room with a 29-20 advantage.
Dickinson made a run to start the second half and closed to within a point at 33-32 before back-to-back layups by junior
Tommy McGuire gave the Mules some breathing room.
The Red Devils cut the gap to three points, at 48-45, but again Muhlenberg finished the half strong, allowing only three field goals – one a meaningless three at the final buzzer – in the final 6:11.
For the game, the Mules held Dickinson to 26.2-percent shooting.
Senior
Nicholas Chudy and freshman
Luke Gordos both made their first career starts, combining for seven points. Junior
Matt Kempter had four steals in eight minutes off the bench.
