Senior Pitchers Pace Mules to Split

Two senior starting pitchers went out in style as the Muhlenberg baseball team split its season-ending doubleheader at Washington College.

Truman Devitt pitched into the eighth inning in the opener, combining with freshman Sam Kelstein and junior Will Nomura on a six-hit shutout in a 4-0 Mule win. In the nightcap, Paul Poppert pitched eight full innings and was in line to get the win until the Shoremen walked off with a 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth.

Devitt (pictured above) allowed five hits and struck out six without walking a batter en route to his sixth career win. He fanned two batters with a runner on third to keep the shutout intact in the sixth; the first of those whiffs was the 100th of his career. Devitt departed with a runner on first and one out in the eighth. Kelstein struck out the only batter he faced, and Nomura retired four batters to polish off the Mules' first shutout of the Shoremen since 2003.

Muhlenberg jumped on top with two runs in the top of the first thanks to some heads-up baserunning. Junior Ryan Hebert led off with an infield single and wheeled all the way around to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jack Kent. Senior Justin Kimmel brought in Hebert with a ground ball, and senior Skyler Petrie plated a second run on a sacrifice fly.

Hebert also scored the Mules' last two runs. In the sixth, he drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a bunt by Kent and stole third before scoring on a single by senior Cameron Miller. In the eighth, he drew another leadoff walk and came in on Petrie's second sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Christian Schwarz had the big blow for Muhlenberg (7-9, 6-8) in the second game, hitting a bases-clearing double in the sixth to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead. That advantage stood up until the Shoremen (16-9, 8-6) hit a walkoff two-run homer in the ninth.

Junior Danny Monzo hit a pinch-hit single in the top of the ninth, denying himself a quirky bit of history. He entered the at-bat with seven hits on the season - all doubles. The school record for most hits in a season without a single is three, set by Petrie in 2019.
