Dan Gaines scored his 1000th point for the Muhlenberg men's basketball team in a 72-60 home loss to DeSales.
The milestone was part of a 19-point, 6-rebound, 6-assist effort for Gaines and came on his second basket of the game, a floater with 11:20 remaining in the first half. Gaines
(pictured above) reached 1000 points in his 62nd career game; of the 36 Mules who preceded him, only four got there faster: Malique Killing (2014), Bob McClure (1970) and Jeff Stewart (2006), who all did it in 56 games, and Larry Friedman (1954) in his 59th game.
Muhlenberg (3-7) played from behind for most of the game against the undefeated, 24th-ranked Bulldogs (11-0) and could not quite catch up. Down by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Mules closed to within four points twice down the stretch, but DeSales hit some big shots to maintain its lead.
Senior Nate Henty Brown finished with 10 points and reached a milestone of his own, making his 100th career three-pointer early in the second half. He is the 19th player in team history to reach the century mark. Freshman Jayson Williams-Johnson scored 9 points in his first career start.
Half of Muhlenberg's 10 opponents have one loss or fewer this season. The Mules entered the game with the 18th-highest opponent winning percentage in Division III - .658, a number that jumped to .699 with the addition of DeSales' record.
