Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Opens with Big Win

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team shot over 64 percent in the second half to pull away and defeat Moravian, 94-71, in its 2021-22 season opener.

Seniors Dan Gaines and Dallas Hoffman combined to score exactly half of the points - 47 - and went 19-for-28 from the field as the Mules rolled to their biggest margin of victory in a season opener in eight years.

Freshman Jayson Williams-Johnson (pictured above) also scored in double figures, netting 10 points in his collegiate debut.

Hoffman was the story early on, going 4-for-4 from three-point range in the first five minutes and change to help Muhlenberg sprint out to a 17-9 lead. He did not make another three but finished with 23 points for his third career 20-point game.

The Greyhounds rallied in the middle and late stages of the half, taking a 33-32 lead with 2:28 to play. But the Mules responded quickly with a 10-0 run and took a 42-35 lead into the break.

Senior Nate Henty Brown opened the second half with a three-pointer, and Muhlenberg led by double digits the rest of the way for all but about 16 seconds. It was 47-39 before the Mules put the game out of reach with a 13-0 run that featured eight points from Gaines and a three-point play by Hoffman.

Gaines finished with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and no turnovers in 29 minutes.

Muhlenberg shot 56.1 percent from the field for the game, going 26-of-37 (70.3 percent) on two-pointers.

Junior Tommy McGuire contributed to the defensive effort with 4 steals and a pair of blocks.

Senior Nicholas Chudy scored 8 points, one off his career high, in seven minutes off the bench. In addition to Williams-Johnson, junior Bryce Nash, freshman Micah Coates and sophomore Brandon Goldberg all scored their first career points.
