Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Wins ECAC Championship

The Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored twice late in the second half to defeat Rutgers-Newark, 3-1 in the ECAC championship game.

The ECAC title was the second in a row for the Mules (10-7-2), who are 7-0 in the last two postseasons. En route to this title, Muhlenberg beat the top seed in each of the tournament's two pods.

Junior Taylan Akdag, who scored points in each of Muhlenberg's three wins and was involved in all three goals in the final, was named ECAC Tournament MVP. Joining him on the all-tournament team were juniors Tarin Morris and Chris Richards and freshman Kevin Adams.

The title game was tied 1-1 with less than 15 minutes remaining when Richards scored the winning goal off a perfectly weighted pass from the right side of the field by Akdag. Richards hit the ball into the right side of the net for his 19th career goal, his third of this ECAC Tournament.

Muhlenberg added an insurance goal less than 80 seconds later when the Rutgers-Newark goalie came out to clear a ball but missed. Akdag got to the ball and finished into the open net.

The Mules opened the scoring at the 11:34 mark off a free kick from Akdag, headed by Richards to Morris, who scored on a hard shot under the crossbar. The Scarlet Raiders (14-5-4), who had lost only one home game all season, tied the score on a penalty kick.

Sophomore Zach Matik made four saves to earn the win in the championship game.
