The Muhlenberg women's soccer team came within inches of erasing a two-goal deficit but fell at Swarthmore, 3-1.
The Garnet (4-3-2, 2-2-1), which has won three of the last six Centennial Conference championships, netted a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead that stood up well into the second half.
In the 75th minute, however, sophomore
Lucy Atwood drew a foul that gave the Mules (1-9-1, 1-5) a free kick from about 25 yards out. Junior
Alexandra Chirinkin sent in a ball that bounced once in the box, went untouched and slipped past the goalie and inside the far post. It was the second career goal for Chirinkin
(pictured above).
Muhlenberg continued to apply pressure after the goal and had another free kick outside the box in the 81st minute. A blast by junior
Noemi Di Cori was parried over the crossbar at the last second, and the Mules could not cash in on the ensuing corner kick.
Swarthmore scored on a free kick in the final three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Grace Hoffman made a career-high 10 saves, several at point-blank range, in her second career start.
