Behind a record performance by senior
Jake Whittingslow, the Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team toppled Oneonta, 20-4.
Whittingslow broke school records, one set in 1974 and the other in 1975, with eight goals and nine points. He recorded hat tricks in the first and third quarters, and his record-breaking goal was a man-up tally with 1:38 remaining in the fourth off a pass from junior
Dominick DiStefano.
Four previous Mules had scored seven goals in a game, most recently in 2011, and five Mules had logged eight points, most recently
Ethan Grossman four games ago.
Whittingslow scored his eight goals on only 10 shots, and he had plenty of company as Muhlenberg (5-0) scored at least 15 goals for the school-record fifth consecutive game. Sixteen different Mules recorded a point, with freshmen
Charlie Collins,
Ryan Johnson and
Elijah Robinson netting their first career goals and junior longstick
Sam Elias notching his first career point.
DiStefano finished with a career-high three points on a goal and two assists, and sophomore
James Dalimonte dished out a career-high three assists.
Muhlenberg led 4-2 after one before reeling off seven straight goals in the second, their highest-scoring quarter of the season. The Mules, who enjoyed a 56-18 advantage in shots, went on another 7-0 run later in the game.
The 20 goals are one short of the school record, as are the 38 combined goals the Mules have scored in their last two games.
Whittingslow (13), senior
Scott Fayan (11), freshman
Jack Kraemer (11), Grossman (10) and Dalimonte (10) give the Mules five players with double digits in goals just five games into the season.
Muhlenberg started its nine active seniors, including
Dylan Clayton and
Frank Caterina (pictured above).
